Sustainability Sells: 89% of Consumers Would Pay More for Eco-Friendly Packaging

At ProPak Asia 2025, it became clear that sustainability is no longer just a trend, it’s an industry-wide expectation. Based on direct feedback from attendees, paperboard stood out as the material most closely associated with eco-friendly food packaging. The insights, gathered through surveys and conversations during the event, show a growing urgency among packaging professionals and F&B brands to shift toward more eco-friendly solutions.

Packaging Preferences from ProPak Asia Point to a Greener Future

During ProPak Asia 2025, Foopak conducted a simple on-site survey with 1,012 visitors who tried experienced our packaging firsthand. After tasting the products, we asked participants a few quick questions about their views on packaging and sustainability.

92% of respondents are aware of the environmental impact of single-use plastic.
92% also recognize that sustainable paperboard has strong potential to replace plastic in many applications.
89% are willing to pay more for eco-friendly packaging alternatives.
73% identified paperboard as their top choice for sustainable food packaging.
The top reasons cited were its recyclability, renewable sourcing, and positive brand perception.

While plastic alternatives were mentioned, many expressed concerns about unclear biodegradability and the lack of recycling infrastructure. On the other hand, recent innovations in coated paperboard and improved barrier performance are seen as key to enabling wider adoption in the food and beverage sector.

This data reinforces a growing consensus that paperboard isn’t just gaining popularity, it’s rapidly becoming the default choice for brands seeking to future-proof their packaging strategies.
